My name is Marne Garretson, and I am pleased to announce that I am in my second year of college at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, MA. I am taking pre-engineering and pre-medical courses. I am an Acceleration to Excellence and W.E.B. DuBois Scholar. Last year, I played on the Women's Soccer Team and the Women's Basketball Team.
This past summer, I participated in the first Maymester voyage with the Semester at Sea Program. I visited: Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, and Panama. I spent 26 days on a cruise ship and studied Global Health. After returning home, I completed an internship at the National Institutes of Health National Instiute on Drug Abuse in Baltimore, Maryland.
Prior to enrolling at Simon's Rock, I attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. I completed the following courses: Principles of Biology, General Chemistry I & II, Intermediate Composition, Pre-Calculus, Composition & Literature: Short Story, Italian Renaissance Art: The Early Renaissance, Survey of Western Art: Medieval & Renaissance, Seminar for Studying Abroad, Orientation to College, Diversity of Life, and Honors Freshman Seminar.
I completed my freshman year in high school at Clarksburg High School in Clarksburg, Maryland. At Clarksburg High School, I was an Advanced Placement Power Scholar. I completed honors and Advanced Placement Courses. I completed the school year with a 3.8 unweighted GPA while studying: AP Government, Honors Algebra II, Honors Physics, Honors English, Spanish, and Choir. I also played on the JV Volleyball Team and the JV Softball Team. I was a member of the Debate and Model United Nations Club.
I attended The Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland for elementary and middle school. At The Bullis School, I played on the Middle School Basketball Team. I was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Latin. I discovered my interest in science and math through my courses, projects, summer activities and presentations. My most memorable presentation was in the 5th grade and it was making a presentation on how I would spend one million dollars. I made a presentation on how I would open an obstectric practice. My most memorable field trip was visiting Johns Hopkins Medical Center to hear Dr. Ben Carson speak.
I am the founder of Educational Books & Media, an e-bookstore that is an approved seller with Amazon.com. The mission is to provide low cost, gently used books, music CDs, DVDs, games and software to both students and the general public. Our vision is to protect the environment by recylcing books and media. My career goal is to become a Physician Scientist in order to engage in research that will help underserved populations. I am currently participating in a Physician Scientist Training Program. It is a longitudinal program that prepares students to enter the biomedical field. For two summers, I attended classes taught by medical students in topics such as: statistics, anatomy, histology, microbiology, genetics, scientific writing, scientific presentation. I made presentations on HIV/AIDS, Diabetes and Hypertension. For two summers, I worked in a laboratory with mentor scientists. I am a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, Global Health Council, Student National Medical Association, American Chemical Society, American Society of Microbiology and the American Medical Student Association. As a member of the 2010 National Board of Directors for the Student National Medical Association, I am serving as a Co-Chair for the Publications Committee. For 2011, I am serving as the Pre Medical Forum Coordinator for the Student National Medical Association.

MY MEDICAL MISSION TRIP TO THE
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
DECEMBER 31, 2011-JANUARY 7, 2012
On December 31, 2011, I will be departing for the Dominican Republic to participate in a medical mission trip with Volunteers for Medical Missions (VIMM), a 501(c)(3) non profit organization in South Carolina. VIMM is an interdenominational Christian organization that sends short term medical missions teams into developing countries. In VIMM's 25 year history over $33 million in medical care has been provided. The cost of the trip is $1,750.00, and I am soliciting your support.
